A Message from ALF President Leslie R. Barineau
Greetings,
Last week I watched the ESPY Awards Ceremony, which is entertaining as well as emotional. It is fun to see what individuals and teams will be recognized for individual and team athletic achievements. I was glad to see two of my favorites win this year, Shohei Ohtani as the winner of the Best MLB Player Award and Nick Saban as the recipient of the Icon Award.
In listening to the powerful and thought-provoking speeches of Nick Saban, Dawn Staley, the recipient of the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance; and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, the recipient of the Pat Tillman Award for Service, their message was clear. When people unite for a common purpose – compassion for others – great achievements can be made in our communities and throughout the world.
Brannon Buck, Past President of the Alabama State Bar, knows and understands this message loud and clear. During his year as President, he compiled a team of people to create a new online platform called Justice4AL.com. This initiative aims “to connect those in need of legal assistance with free, accessible, and comprehensive legal resources.” It is a “one-stop destination for individuals seeking guidance and support through the legal system.”
Brannon, what an outstanding job you and your team have done. Thank you for your efforts to make our legal system a more fair and just one for all Alabamians.

As ALF begins our physical year, I want us to continue to emphasize “compassion for others” through our various grants, scholarships, and programs. We can strive to do more! Our theme will be: “Who did ALF help today?”

- MVLP provides resources empowering equal justice
The Montgomery Volunteer Lawyers Program (MVLP) is dedicated to providing free legal assistance to those in need. By linking low-income individuals with attorneys who offer their services pro bono, MVLP demonstrates the powerful impact that a united community can have. To support both lawyers and Alabama residents, MVLP offers two key resources: the Easy Evidence Booklet and the Alabama Tenants’ Handbook.
The Easy Evidence Booklet is designed for attorneys who are new to the VLP, especially those handling cases outside their typical areas of practice in less familiar courts. This guide helps streamline the process, making it easier for lawyers to contribute their time. The Tenants’ Handbook serves as an educational tool for renters, addressing common issues that could lead to disputes and helping to prevent landlord-tenant conflicts often seen in the volunteer lawyer docket.
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR KIDS WITH DISABLED PARENTS
If you or someone you know has a parent who was permanently disabled or killed in a work-related injury, you are eligible to receive a scholarship.
Law Related Charitable Grants
We are the largest funder of Alabama organizations that provide free civil legal aid to low-income Alabama residents and for law related charitable programs.
